The initial proposal for the Center for Haitian Studies took place at the i, held in New York City, November 1-4, 1967. During its relatively brief existence, the Center helped focus attention on critical issues in Haiti under the Duvalier government and provided research and training opportunities for Haitians living abroad or in exile.
